Valves such as the two shown above keep "junk and trash" in the fuel tank. That is NOT a good practice.
Some portable Generators (and other equipment)
have a fuel valve that is installed into the
bottom of the fuel tank.
Some of the valves are plastic and
some are of metal construction.
The valve is either screwed into the bottom of metal tanks
or held in place on plastic tanks by a
rubber tank bushing (grommet) shown below.

Usually, this type of valve has a built-in filter screen.
The screen is only visible from inside of the tank
with the valve installled. The screen may not be
visible if the tank is full of fuel.

In this picture, for conversation, both valves are oriented as if in the bottom of the tank.
The problem with this type of valve is that the screen while it does a good job of filtering junk prior to fuel entering the fuel line, it keeps the junk inside of the fuel tank. In time the junk will clogg the screen, building up inside the tank choking off the screen and causing a lot of work cleaning out the tank. Hopefully when this happens "to you", the tank is not full of fuel.

Another similar design is the in tank fitting with strainer. This fitting does not incorporate a valve, but it still has the screen built in.

Neither of these are good designs and do not provide easy fuel system maintenance.

An external inline fuel filter is a better filtration design. You can easily replace the filter when you realize it is time to replace it.

If you want a see thru fuel filter use the BRIGGS AND STRATTON 845125 FUEL FILTER FUEL FILTER USED WITH 1/4" I.D. FUEL LINE.

Both filters adapt to 1/4 inch i.d. fuel line.

Using an inline filter is much easier to replace and easy to gain access,
When the filter is used along with an inline fuel valve, the valve easily isolates the filter for easy replacement.

If you are going to use the valve shown above
is should be installed between the "IN LINE" filter discussed above and tank
so you can shut off the newly installed in line fuel valve to replace the "in line" filter.

It is easy to modify your fuel line.
Simply remove the bottom tank valve and install a new tank bushing and tank fitting to allow you to connect the fuel line.
The new bottom tank fitting is available in either a straight fitting OR a 90 degree elbo fitting.

Use a new bottom tank bushing mentioned above when making this change.
This modification may require additional hose clamps and fuel line.

See below for a complete list by part number of the items needed
to make this modification to most generators and similar fuel
line installations.
