THERMAL RELIEF VALVES
FOR PRESSURE WASHERS
Thermal relief valves used on pressure washers dumps hot water generated by an overheating pump. Many users do not understand that while the "trigger" is released on the spray gun, the pump begins to re-circulate water inside the pump. The water has stopped flowing through the pump and is now collecting heat from the pump. When that water reaches 140 degrees F., the THERMAL RELIVE VALVE is designed to open and dump water out through the valve. Once the temperature drops below 140 degrees the THERMAL RELIEF VALVE will close. If you don't pull the trigger on the gun the temperature could rise and burn up the pump. The valve is designed to help keep the pump from burning up, but that is not always the case.
Case in point. Some customers leave their pressure washer out in the HOT sunshine while on a break. The water supply hose, usually a typical garden hose, collects heat while laying in the hot sunshine. If you were to measure the temperature of the water inside that hose after 30 minutes, it may be well over 140 degrees. May be even near "darn hot" if it were to flow across your skin. TO PROTECT YOUR PUMP, you should disconnect the supply hose from the pressure washer and clear out that hot water, run til cold. Then re-connect again for continued use. IF YOU USE THAT HOT WATER, and if it is above the standard 140 degree valve temperature, DAMAGE WILL OCCUR to your pump. PULLING THE TRIGGER GUN TO OPEN and flushing the water out does the same thing. DO NOT DO THAT, remove the hose from the pump inlet and flush out the hot water!
Inside the pump head are plastic parts that can be damaged from hot water exposure.
SUGGESTED PRACTICE-
If wasting water in not a concern, and if you need to "water the lawn", while on break, TURN OFF THE PRESSURE WASHER, remove the spray gun from the high pressure hose and let water flow through the pump, out the high pressure hose and onto the lawn or the flower garden. This will allow the pump to cool down and will keep it cool ready for your use once you return from the lunch break. If you do not have "quick connectors" at the gun inlet, you can buy them from our website. We also have for sale "quick connectors" for the water hose connection at the pump inlet.
